He was surprised to see how tabloid journalism was alive and well even then and operating in the same way, just sensationalizing a complete fabrication of untruths, said Brad Pitt, who stars as the legendary outlaw in "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." There's more of it in quantity, but the execution's the same. In that day, when we only had a newspaper to get some information, that would have been the extent of it. But it doesn't seem to have changed at all, Brad Pitt told journalists at the Toronto International Film Festival. Pitt & Angelina, stars of the 2005 hit "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," have been the quarry of celebrity photographers & the object of incessant tabloid gossip since they hooked up amid the breakup of Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston. A media vigil preceded the birth of their daughter in Namibia last year, & crowds swelled during the Toronto festival everywhere they went. In the late 1800s, James was able to move anonymously through USA under a series of aliases, but his notoriety was unparalleled. James' image as a Robin Hood-style bandit of the people (a myth he helped perpetuate himself) had made him a folk hero to the public & a demon to the railroads. Based on Ron Hansen's novel, "Assassination of Jesse James" dissects the James myth to present a charismatic man in the last year of his life, as his sense of security crumbles & he is overwhelmed by paranoia that associates are selling him out to the law...

Extortion? Yes

David Hans Schmidt, 47, has agreed to plea guilty to one count of sending communications for purposes of extortion. He faces up to 2 years in federal prison & a $250,000 fine. It wasn't known when Schmidt, who lives in Phoenix and is free on $100,000 bond, might enter his plea in court. A phone message left for his attorney N. Kardon was not immediately returned. A plea agreement for Schmidt's co-defendant was filed under seal August 24, according to a federal court docket in LA.
Marc Lewis Gittleman, who authorities say helped recover photos from a computer hard drive, has been charged with conspiracy to commit extortion.
Gittleman, 33, faces up to 5 years in prison. His attorney M. Nasatir declined to comment because the plea agreement is under seal.
Gittleman & Schmidt were arrested July 26 after federal authorities said Gittleman obtained photos of Tom Cruise's wedding in Italy last year to Katie Holmes from the event's official photographer, court documents show.
Gittleman then made copies of photos on the drive & kept them for himself, authorities said. He contacted Schmidt after finding a Web site touting his abilities to broker celebrity photos...

"Ugly Betty"

A Hollywood adaptation of the Colombian telenovela "Yo Soy Betty La Fea," "Betty" swirls around a plain young woman who lands a job as assistant to a fashion-magazine editor. The show was an out-of-the-gate hit following its autumn 2006 debut on ABC, & has also scored well overseas. British actor Ashley Jensen ("Extras"), who plays Betty's workplace confidante Christina, said, that he thinks he can see a bit of Ugly Betty in all of us, and he mean men, as well, because it's about the underdog. On the red carpet at the swanky Skybar in Hollywood's Mondrian Hotel, the actors looked like anything but underdogs, donning duds from such heavyweight designers as Prada (Jensen), Nanette Lepore (Ferrera) & Bill Blass (Ana Ortiz, who plays Betty's sister, Hilda).

Death of The Contemporary Jazz Creator

His death (at 83 y.o.) was announced today by a spokesman for Blue Note records. Max Roach had been known to be ill for several years. As a young man, Max Roach, a percussion virtuoso capable of playing at the most brutal tempos with subtlety as well as power, was among a small circle of adventurous musicians who brought about wholesale changes in jazz. He remained adventurous to the end. Over the years he challenged both his audiences & himself by working not just with standard jazz instrumentation, & not just in traditional jazz venues, but in a wide variety of contexts. Some of them well beyond the confines of jazz as that word is generally understood. He led a “double quartet” consisting of his working group of trumpet, saxophone, bass & drums plus a string quartet. He led an ensemble consisting entirely of percussionists. He dueted with uncompromising avant-gardists like the pianist Cecil Taylor and the saxophonist Anthony Braxton. He performed unaccompanied. He wrote music for plays by Sam Shepard & dance pieces by Alvin Ailey. He collaborated with video artists, gospel choirs and hip-hop performers...

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko asked the Central Electoral Commission "to consider voluntarily again", without waiting for court intervention, the documents of the Yuliya Tymoshenko bloc for candidates' registration for the early parliamentary election scheduled for 30 September, Maryna Stavniychuk, the deputy head of the presidential secretariat, Yushchenko's representative in the Central Electoral Commission and the Constitutional Court, told a briefing on Monday (13 August). "The Central Electoral Commission will thus resolve the problems in the election process that has arisen now and remove questions about the organization of the early parliamentary elections regarded as technicalities," Stavniychuk said. She said Yushchenko on Monday received Tymoshenko's letter calling for "every measure to ensure citizens' rights and freedoms". After that the president turned to the Central Electoral Commission. "The president's request is quite justifiable and is based on provisions of Ukraine's existing legislation and is in keeping with the provisions of the Constitution," Stavniychuk said. On the night to Saturday, the Central Electoral Commission refused to register the list of parliamentary candidates from the Yuliya Tymoshenko Bloc, as, in violation of the law for candidates' registration, it did not supply their addresses.

A Little Night Art ...

The real action at the Mostly Mozart Festival takes place inside Lincoln Center’s halls. A multimedia work by Marc Downie and Paul Kaiser of the OpenEnded Group, could be seen as an accompaniment, not the main attraction. This installation — eight light boxes, corresponding banners and speakers emitting computer-generated music — also has the tall order of functioning as a discrete artwork. It is installed on the exterior of the main-entrance side of Avery Fisher Hall — on the columns and within the ground-floor portico — and is best experienced after sundown (between 8:45 and 11:45, to be specific). Standing with concertgoers examining the 12-foot-tall light boxes in the portico, the word you hear most often is “interesting.” And “Breath” is, in fact, packed full of interesting data and factoids. The first light box takes its inspiration from a story about Mozart buying a pet starling, supposedly after hearing it sing a musical theme he had written.

Roberts, 46, told "GMA" viewers last Tuesday that she had cancer, which she discovered through self-examination. Her mother & sisters traveled from the Mississippi Gulf Coast & New Orleans to be with her for the operation. The former college basketball star & sportscaster grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Roberts, who was anchor at Good Morning America since 2005 said that her family read many e-mails while she was in surgery. It brought them such comfort. Her big sis, Sally-Ann, marked all the survivor stories with a big S. She said her co-anchor, Diane Sawyer, had visited her in the hospital. She said that she woke up in the recovery room with sweet Diane gently tugging on her big toe. As we can imagine, she is still quite sore from the procedure & need to take some time for her body to heal. Roberts left the hospital on the day of her surgery. She said that right now the best medicine for her is to be at home surrounded by family & loved ones. And she expects to get the final test results later this week, which will determine the course of her treatment.
