Yкраинский музей в Нью-уйорке имеет 3 ее холста - «Little Orange Girl in a Pink City», «Aces & Faces» и известная «Queen of Magic»…

Tanning and Cancer Go Hand-in-Hand
Tanning and cancer go hand-in-hand. Without tanning beds, soaking up the rays was limited to clear days in the summer. The invention of the tanning bed changed that, and throughout the 90s, the rapid proliferation of tanning salons provided venues for millions of people to sunbathe regardless of weather, time of day, season.
Since early 90s, the tanning industry has grown with 28 million indoor tanners in the United States supporting a billion-dollar-a-year business. During that same period, melanoma rates have increased by 2% in the general population. Amongst young women, who make up 71 percent of tanning salon customers, incidents of melanoma have increased by 2.2%. Over that time, skin cancer also became the most common form of cancer for Americans ages 25-29. Some dermatologists believe that other factors, such as increased UV exposure resulting from the hole in the ozone layer, contribute to the rise in melanoma rates over the last 18 years. But the irrefutable link between indoor tanning and melanoma makes tanning beds the prime suspect.
In a recent study by researchers at the University of Michigan, frequent tanning bed users provided three times more likely to develop melanoma than non-users, subjects that used tanning beds for any amount of time showed a 74-percent higher rate of melanoma than non-users, according to research published online May 27 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
Indoor and outdoor tanning can be dangerous, because the same ultraviolet radiation that provokes a tan also damages DNA. In fact, exposure to the mid-day sun can produce as many as 40,000 DNA errors an hour.
The UV light causes the DNA molecule thymine to bind to adjacent thymine molecules in a manner that renders both molecules unreadable during transcriptions. Transcription is a step in which the body reads the DNA instructions the cell will later follow. When those thymine errors occur in areas of DNA that regulate cell growth, skin cancers like melanoma can begin to develop. Most times, skin cells rapidly repair most of those 40,000 errors, but over time repeated errors can cause cancer or other problems.
Jossey-Bass: Student Success in Community Colleges and More
Student Succes in Community Colleges, Jossey-BassStudent Success In Community Colleges: A Practical Guide to Developmental Education by Deborah Boroch, Laura Hope, Bruce Smith, Robert Gabriner, Pamela Mery, Rob Johnstone, and Rose Asera published by Jossey-Bas in 2010. Opportunities to effect change that can lead to institutional transformation are rare. When administrators and faculty respond to challenges with quality research, the resulting changes to policy and practice can change students’ lives. Basic skills can present such opportunity, offering college leaders a path to a strategy, combining and directing effective practices, that result in institutional transformation. This book frames basic skills as an institutional strategy and designed to help engage community college leadership and practitioners in addressing the structures, practices, and obstacles that enhance the success of basic skills students. This book reveals how investing in a comprehensive basic skills infrastructure can be a financially sustainable model for the institution and beneficial to students and society. Student Success In Community Colleges: A Practical Guide to Developmental Education is the most comprehensive source of information ever published about the developmental education. It includes practical suggestions and analysis, which are written by a team of practicing professionals in administration, teaching, and research.
Learning the Learner-Centered Campus, Jossey-BassLearning the Learner-Centered Campus: an Administrator’s Framework for Improving Student Learning Outcomes by Michael Harris and Roxanne Cullen published by Jossey-Bass in 2010. Learning-centered teaching has mostly been a grassroots movement, changing the landscape of higher education classroom by classroom. The progress is slow, resistance from students and faculty is common. In this book, Harris and Cullen point out that the change requires something much more dramatic. The power of the authors‘ voices derives from experience, they write with understanding of and appreciation for grassroots leadership. The authors of this book offer an approach for campus leaders who are willing to take on the challenge of envisioning their own practices in order to make the shift in paradigms complete, and offers specific strategies for beginning the task of critically studying habitual practices. Michael Harris is the provost and vice president for academic affairs and a professor of policy at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. Roxanne Cullen is a professor of English at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan
Another Good Year for Women in Politics
At first glance, it may seem that this being another good year for women in politics. Two former, very rich women CEOs won Republican primary elections in California. It is eBay’s Meg Whitman for governor, and Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, won the right to face Democrat Barbara Boxer for United States Senate seat. In South Carolina, a state representative, Nikki Haley, moved past infidelity allegations to win the top spot in a GOP runoff for governor. In Nevada, a tea party-backed state legislator, Sharron Angle, beat the Republican party favorite for the chance to oust Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid.
This year more Republican women are running for office nationwide, and some are less moderate than their forerunners.
This is also the year when women like Sarah Palin who once ran from the word “feminist” are now embracing it, co-opting it, as Jessica Valenti writes in the Washington Post.
Sarah Palin's endorsement is a sought-after prize on the campaign trail, and her tea-party support may very well be boosting efforts by conservative women who would not have made it beyond the primaries in the past.
But, you know, even though it’s alarming that women who take what some of us clearly see as anti-women stands are making it to general elections, it is actually another sign of how far women have come in politics.
Part of what we are seeing now is the accomplishment of the women’s political movement in the community to open the doors for women in politics.
Another good thing about this year's elections is that Anne Kornblut of The Washington Post notes that gender was not the focus of any of these races, but money was. Fiorina did bring up her battle with breast cancer, but gender issues did not rise to the top.
Tuesday's elections put on display the increasing diversity of female candidates and their growing resilience. They were pro-choice and pro-life, old and young, part of the political establishment and new to it. Their male opponents attacked them, sometimes unworried about being seen as picking on a woman. The women touched on their gender, but did so sparingly.
Now that we’ve seen a very credible candidate handle a presidential campaign - Hillary Clinton, and a vice presidential candidate build considerable political sway across the US after losing - Sarah Palin. And no one to question whether women are right for the job. Let’s not call the fact that billionaire and millionaire women are following billionaire and millionaire men into high office progress. Let’s not say that the number of women running alone makes 2010 the year of the woman. Especially when some of recent candidates fail to credit the women who worked hard before them for their right to run and be supported for political office.
The National Academies Press: The Planetary System, Earth Science and More\
The Limits of Organic Life on Planetary System, NAPThe Limits of Organic Life in Planetary Systems by National Research Council published by The National Academies Press in 2007. Previous life-detection experiments have been criticized for being too geocentric. This study aims to inform research program policy makers, managers, and mission designers about the possibilities for life on other solar system bodies. The search for signs of life is an important goal of NASA’s robotic solar system exploration program and for its astronomical programs designed to probe the gross characteristics of extra solar planetary systems. This book explores a limited set of hypothetical alternative chemistries of life by following a hierarchy of possibilities that have been ranked through exploratory, experimental, and theoretical work done in the past.
The Earth Observation From Space, NAPEarth Observations From Space: The First 50 Years Of Scientific Achievements by National Research Council published by the National Academies Press in 2008. The image of the “blue marble” was revolutionary when taken in 1972. Since then, the capability to look at earth from space has grown increasingly sophisticated and has evolved from simple photographs to quantitative measurements of Earth properties such as temperature, concentrations of atmosphere Eric trace gates, and exact elevation of land and ocean. This important book highlights the scientific achievements made possible by the first five decades of Earth satellite observations by space-faring nations. Recognizing the increasing need for space observation, the decadal survey identifies future directions and priorities for Earth observations from Space.
Earth Science and Applications from Space, NAPEarth Science And Applications From Space: Urgent Needs And Opportunities To Serve The Nation by National Research Council published by The National Academies Press in 2005. The decades of the 1980s and 1990s saw the emergence of a new paradigm for understanding our planet, studying and observing Earth as a system of interconnected parts including the ocean, land, atmosphere, biosphere, and solid earth. This book is the result of a decadal survey of Earth science and applications from space; The guiding principles developed in consultation with members of Earth science community. The purpose of this book is to provide an early indication of urgent, near-term issues that require attention prior to publication of the committee’s final report.
